  • What is God’s will?
  • God wants us to know his will.
  • Ephesians 5:17 –  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:17 ESV)
  • Let’s examine what’s God will is based on scripture…
3 Circles of Context:
1.  The Works of God – The Sovereign will of God
  • God will accomplish his will no matter our involvement or not.
  • Creation, Abraham & Sarah, Moses, Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection. – When God decides to do something he gets it done whether we get involved in the process or not.
2. The Ways of God – God’s Moral Law
  • The 10 commandments
  • The Sermon on the Mount
  • Also, God can use things that are outside of his ways to accomplish his will.
  • Be holy, be pure, be set apart
  • The ways of God are clear.  – They may not be convenient or easy, but they are clear.
3.  The Will of God – Personal Guidance
  • When – to Sell house?
  • Where – to go to college?
  • What – should I do with my life?
  • These questions create a lot of confusion and stress for people.
  • The “One Person” Fallacy – One person’s mistake can throw-off the relational balance of the universe.
  • We understand that sometimes God has specific assignments for specific people
  • But, in most cases, God gives us freedom of choice…
  • Key Scripture:  Col 3:17 – And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:17 ESV)
  • Paul – When you live with Christ at the center of your life…whatever you do
  • We think we need the details, but what if the center of God’s will is knowing his Ways
  • Once we know and live in His Ways we are automatically in the circle of his Will.
  • Whatever I do God is more concerned with:
  • How – I live my life is more important than where I live my life
  • Why – You show up to work is more important than where you work.
  • Who – I am in Christ is more important than what I do for a living.
  • The Key:  When I walk in His Ways I will always be in His Will.
  • 2 Sam 22:31 As for God…His way is perfect
  • Stop trying get God to reveal His concealed will.
  • God wants us to be obedient to the revealed parts of His ways.
  • When you are in God’s Ways you are in God’s Will.
  • More important than tracing God’s hand and discovering where He wants us to go, is learning God’s heart and discovering who He wants us to be.
  • Prov 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him/submit to him, and he will make straight your paths. (Proverbs 3:5, 6 ESV)
3 Tips Relating to God’s Will
1.  Realize that God’s will is present, more than future – It’s about how I’m living more than when I’m living.
  • Whatever you do…right now… not what you do tomorrow or ten years from now.
  • Until you do God’s will you won’t discover God’s will.
  • God will take what you are doing right now to prepare you for the future.
  • Ex 3:1-3 – Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” (Exodus 3:1-3 ESV)
  • Moses was tending sheep. He wasn’t expecting a burning bush.
2.  God’s will is motive before action – Do it in Jesus name.
  • Do it in dependance on God/Jesus
  • Do it with confidence in His authority
  • Do it as His follower – Let these be the motives of our heart.
  • What will sustain us in the days that are dark and painful?  What is our motivation?  Do it in Jesus name according to his ways.
3.  God’s Will is a person more than a place – giving thanks to God the father
  • St. Augustine – Love God and do whatever you please: for the soul trained in love to God (following his ways) will do nothing to offend the One who is Beloved.”
  • Rom 8:28 – And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 ESV)
  • God can handle all things in life, and make it work for you.
